"Learn from speakers and from each other"
Meetings are held at the Bastrop Public Library on the second Tuesday of each month. The meetings start at 6:30 PM with light refreshments and networking. The business meeting (approximately 15 minutes) begins at 7:00 pm followed by a program of 30-45 minutes by a speaker knowledgeable in a particular subject. Click

Program for May 8, 2018. The meeting program will be Earth-Kind Principles by Patricia Anderson, President Bastrop County Master Gardeners Association. Earth-Kind Landscaping uses research-proven techniques to provide maximum garden and landscape enjoyment while preserving and protecting the environment. The objective of Earth-Kind Landscaping is to combine the best of organic and traditional gardening and landscaping principles to create a horticultural system based on real world effectiveness and environmental responsibility. Earth-Kind Landscaping encourages: (1) Landscape Water conservation, (2) Reduction of fertilizer and pesticide use, (3) Landscaping for energy conservation (4) Reduction of landscape wastes entering landfills. Individuals using Earth-Kind landscaping principles and practices can create beautiful, easy-care landscapes, while conserving and protecting natural resources and the environment.
Program for April 10, 2018. The meeting program was be “Overview of Community Gardens, aquaponics, spring gardening tips, and planting pots”. This new and big garden center is unique is some ways and the program will provide information aquaponics, spring gardening tips, and a planting pot system. The speakers will be Autumn and Aaron Pyka. Our club's plant sale, silent auction and quilt raffle raised over $10K for the Bastrop Library Summer Children’s program and a check will be presented at that meeting.
The meeting is open to the public at no charge.
Program for March 13, 2018. The program will be “Hooray its spring: what gardeners can do at this good time of the year!. This is a perfect time of the year to prepare (e.g., planting, pruning, soil preparation) for our gardens this year. The speaker was be Jon Pixler who is the horticulturist for the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa. Click here for his short biography.
Program for Feburary 13, 2018. The program will be “Tree selection and tree planting: site, species, and functionality”. This is a great time of the year to plant and take care of these valuable long-term assets in out gardens and landscapes. The speaker will be Vincent Debrock who is an arborist in central Texas since 1999 and current member of the Treefolks board of Directors. Click here for his short biography.
Program for January 9, 2018. The program wasl be "Gardening for Wildlife: From Patterns to Details" by Marica Karr who will describe goal setting (e.g., encouraging or discouraging deer), wildlife needs and the key elements to creating habitat, techniques for maintaining a sustainable system, and ways to measure success. She will frame some of the goal-setting analogies within the context of deer and armadillo challenges. She will also be prepared to take specific questions on those topics at the end. Pogram for October 10, 2017. The meeting program was "Design process for Landscaping". This addressed topics such as planning and executing garden designs which are sustainable and practical. The speaker was Patrica Michael, MFA.
Program for Sep 12, 2017. The meeting program was be "Actions we can take to encourage wildlife in our suburban and rural areas and Wildlife Ag programs". This addressed topics such as a "food/water/shelter" for wildlife and the Texas wildlife Ag program to encourage open space and wildlife. The speaker was Robert Trudeau, Wildlife Biologist for Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Program for May 9, 2017. The meeting program was "Keys to creating habitat from the back yards to the back forty". The speaker will be Jason May who is the Resource Specialist for Lost Pines Complex of Bastrop and Buesher state parks. Click here for his short biography. We also installed the new Club officers.

Program for Mar 14, 2017. The meeting program was "Creating and Sustaining a Wildlife Habitat". The speaker was Marya Fowler who is the Senior Manager for Education Outreach at the National Wildlife Foundation. Click here for her short biography. Click here for her informative presentation.

Program for Feb 14, 2017. The meeting program was an overview of the Bastrop Master Gardeners program. We also discussed the Mar 24-25 plant sale, silent auction, and quilt raffle. 100% of the income from this event will go to the Bastrop Library summer children's activity program.
Program for Jan 10, 2017. The meeting program was "Insect/plant interactions as seen through the eyes of a butterfly" by Mike Quinn. This provided information on insects such as butterflies and how to encourage them. Mike has a Master degree in entomology from Texas A&M and a B.S. in wildlife from the same school. He was formerly Texas Parks and Wildlife's state-wide invertebrate Biologist and is now the Curatorial Assistant for the University of Texas Insect Collection. Mike has studied the plants and insects of Texas for over 25 years.
Program for Dec 13, 2016. The meeting will be mainly our annual Christmas party. We will also have two "mini-programs where two of our members (Peggy O'Neil and Joyce Rees) will briefly share some "nuggets of wisdom" related to gardening. This will also be a pot luck supper where you bring a dish to share. We will also have a gift exchange where can choose to bring a gift to exchange (value no more than $10). Participation is optional.
Program for Nov 8, 2016. The program focused on trees (selection, planting and care). This is a good time of the year to plant and take care of trees. Trees are assets which should improve and grow with time if selected and cared for. The program will also provide some information on fire and flood recovery in Bastrop County. Program for Oct 11, 2016. Our program was be "Backyard Birds for Gardeners". This discussed ways to help birds in our area including our backyard and gardens. This program also provide useful information on birds. This program will be by Mike Goebel associated with the National Audubon Society. Click here for Mike's informative presentation.
Program for Sep 13, 2016. Our program was "Gardening Activities in the Autumn". The Autumn is a great time for many garden activities in our area. The days are finally cooling and this is a excellent time for many planting and restoration projects in your garden and lawn.
