Sep 10, 2013:  "Reptiles in the Garden" by Bill Brooks. This includes wildlife such as lizards and toads, and their role in the garden such as with natural insect reduction.    While at UT, Bill worked on psychology of animals. Since retirement, he volunteers at TPWD to teach kids how to fish at Bastrop
& Buescher state parks; Naturalist at McKinney Roughs; teaches nature classes to home school groups at Colorado River Refuge, Pines & Prairies Land Trust.


Oct 8, 2013:  “Gardening to minimize wildfire risk”,  The speaker will be Will Boettner who will speak about gardening and measures to reduce wildfire risk.   Will is our Texas A&M Urban Wildland Interface specialist.  He is a subject matter expert on this subject and has been quoted in many articles in the Austin American Statesman.  He will also provide examples of measures to obtain Firewise certification for communities (e.g., the Colony in Bastrop). Information on Firewise is at www.firewise.org.

Jan 14, 2014 "Beneficial Birds Including Hummingbirds" by Mark Klym.  Everyone loves to have birds around their garden, but often common gardening techniques work to minimize the variety we will see around our homes.  This program looks at simple changes we can make to the way we garden - everything from the plants we choose to the way we control insects - that will lead to more variety and greater numbers of birds in our back yards.  Click here for Mark's biography.

April 8 2014 "Xeriscaping and Texas gardens and succulents" by Howard Nemerov
This program described water efficient landscaping techniques for our area.
    This program provided useful information on selection (not all cactus are “equally good” for our area in Texas) and care of these valuable plants for your garden.  Click here and here for his presentations.
