"Learn from speakers and from each other"
Meetings are held at the Bastrop Public Library on the second Tuesday of each month. The meetings start at 6:30 PM with light refreshments and networking. The business meeting (approximately 15 minutes) begins at 7:00 pm followed by a program of 30-45 minutes by a speaker knowledgeable in a particular subject. Click

Program for May 10, 2016. Our program for May 10 was “Soil amendments (e.g., compost, mulch, etc.) and inorganic materials (e.g., rock, sands, perlite, etc.) in the garden and lawn". This was by Phil Gosh of "OrganicsByGosh". This explained materials (compost, etc.), the timing and procedure for materials (e.g., compost) for gardens and lawns. Appropriate materials can be both water wise and fire wise. Some sample materials will be available for attendees.
April 10 program: "Status reports on Bastrop and Buscher State Parks and suggestions on best trees to plant in our area" by Jason May Texas Parks and Wildlife. This program provided information (e.g., wildfire recovery) on these parks which are important for our area. The meeting also provided a summary of the recent Club event to support the Bastrop Public Library summer Childrens program.
March 8 program: "Landscaping and Trees: how do the coincide?" by Jason Alfaro, Parks and Recreation Superintendent for City pf Bastrop. This program discussed the types of trees that are best suited for the Bastrop area (species, small/medium/large size trees). He described best planting/mulching practices and pruning practices. He also described what the City of Bastrop is doing for our city's trees. Click here for Jason's biography.
February 9 program: "Rainwater Collection" by David Schraub of Texas Rain . This program will describe the benefits (e.g for plants, effective use of our scarce water resource) of rainwater collection for gardens and other uses. This program will also describe procedures for setting up you own rainwater collection system.
January 12 program: “Winter activities for gardeners in Bastrop County” by Jon Pixler. The program on Tuesday Jan 12 described useful gardening activities for people to do in Winter in our area. The program addressed activities to prepare for Spring which will arrive soon. The program was be by Jon Pixler who is the horticulturist for the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa" and "garden guru". November 10 Program: “Establishing a large sustainable ranch in Bastrop County” by Sandra Schultz. The program on Nov 10 will describe the challenges and benefits of establishing a sustainable 400 acre ranch. The primary ranch focus is on preserving an area for native Texas plant and wildlife to survive and flourish. This includes vegetation (selection and support of desirable, water efficient plants, control of invasive species), flood control, springs and ponds encouragement, and a plan (e.g., approach to minimize “urbanization”/subdivision) for long term operation of this ranch. The program will be by Sandra Schultz who is a Texas Master Naturalist and has an ongoing relationship with Texas Parks and Wildlife and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for guidance and direction with land management.

This presentation will provide information on this program for gardening education and certification to help deal with the opportunities and challenges of gardening in our area.
