Sept 2014 to May 2015 Meetings

"Learn from speakers and from each other"

Meetings are held at the Bastrop Public Library on the second Tuesday of each month.  The meetings start at 6:30 PM with light refreshments and networking.  The business meeting (approximately 15 minutes) begins at 7:00 pm followed by a program of 30-45 minutes by a speaker knowledgeable in a particular subject.  Click
here for information on prior meeting programs which indicates programs which we endeavor to be useful to gardeners.  Suggestions for programs/speakers are invited. 

We also plan some field trips such as the Hyatt Lost Pine Resort and Spa.  Suggestions are invited

May 12 program: "Texas Wildscapes"  by Kelly Conrad Simon, Urban Wildlife Biologist for Texas Pars and Wildlife.  Click here for her biography.   Texas Wildscapes was developed by Texas Parks and Wildlife in 1995 to assist Texans in creating landscapes that are both visually appealing and attractive to appropriate wildlife.  By providing elements of habitat (food, shelter, and water) in their gardens.  Texans can attract an exciting variety of birds, butterflies, frogs, and lizards and bring the beauty and vitality of nature home.  Having survived the Bastrop Complex fire along with her family and friends, Kelly provides unique insight into landscaping in the burn zone and creating Wildscape landscapes that are also Fire Wise.

April 14, 2015 program: program by Skip Richter
 Seven basic principles of Earth-Kind Landscaping and Earth-Kind plants for the Bastrop area including Earth-Kind roses by Skip Richter (County Extension Agent - Horticulture).  Click here for his biography.  Earth-Kind landscaping uses research-proven techniques to provide maximum garden and landscape enjoyment while preserving and protecting the environment.  The objective of Earth-Kind Landscaping is to combine the best of organic and traditional gardening and landscaping principles to create a horticultural system based on real world effectiveness and environmental responsibility.   Earth-Kind Landscaping Encourages:  Landscape Water conservation, Reduction of fertilizer and pesticide use, Landscaping for energy conservation, and Reduction of landscape wastes entering landfills. Individuals using Earth-Kind landscaping principles and practices can create beautiful, easy-care landscapes, while conserving and protecting natural resources and the environment.
He has just authored a new book, Month by Month Gardening in Texas.  


March 10, 2015 program: "Spring into Spring and Gardening for Children" this program provided information on Spring gardening activities to prepare for our upcoming prime gardening time.  The program will also provide some information on encouraging and supporting gardening by children.  Gardening may be part of the Bastrop Library Summer Children's program.  The program was by by Marcus Young of Bloomers www.bloomerselgin.com


February 10 program "Practical Aspects of Backyard Birds" by Norman Jones.  This program addressed ways to help our feathered friends on our area.  Topics included feeding, housing, predator control, cameras (high speed cameras with telephoto lenses, and bird house video.  Click here for the presentation.

Master Gardener program.  At a prior meeting, a Master Gardener provided information on the Master Gardening program for Bastrop and Caldwell counties.  Click here for some information on the Texas Master Gardener program.   The goal is to train more master gardeners who can serve as gardening resources for Bastrop.  

January 13 program "Gardening activities in Winter" by Jon Pixler.  The Garden Club meeting January 13 was be “Gardening Activities in Winter” by Jon Pixler.  Jon’s program included gardening activities for our area such as pruning, soil preparation, freezing temperature measures, and planning for Spring (which is not far away).  Currently Jon maintains the grounds as the Horticulturalist at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa. Before Mr. Pixler came to the Hyatt he was the Director of the Belize Botanic Gardens in San Ignacio, Belize developing collections of Belizean native plants.   Click here for his biography.  Click here for his presentation.

Sep 9, 2014
:  "Bees in the Garden" by Hayden Wolf. 
Her talk will touch on some basic honey bee biology, how honey bees impact our world, Colony Collapse Disorder, and what you as a gardener can do to help bees, and tips on planting flowers for honey bees. She will also have tips on organic gardening as well as an OG gardening handout sheet. 

Oct 14, 2014:  “Bastrop County Opportunities and Challenges" by Judge Paul Pape.   This will address topics such as water (a critical issue for us) and fire recovery activities (e.g., programs for clearing and replanting).
