Gardening  Tips

Picture
One goal of the Lost Pines Garden Club is to exchange  information with each other on effective gardening techniques including plants  and materials related to gardening.  Special emphasis is on tips which help  address the unique characteristics of our Central Texas area including dealing with drought conditions.
Below are listed some gardening tips.

Master Gardener program.  At a prior meeting, a Master Gardener provided information on the Master Gardening program for Bastrop and Caldwell counties.  Click here for some information on the Texas Master Gardener program.   The goal is to train more master gardeners who can serve as gardening resources for Bastrop.   Hardy cactus for our area.  Click here for useful information from Howard Nemerov on plants which can be good choices.

Effective  and water efficient lawn and vegetation watering/irrigation: Water is a precious resource in limited supply and which costs money.  One major consumer of water can  be lawn irrigation.  Traditional spray heads can waste water by  not providing water to where the grass or plants need it near the  roots.  Drip irrigation involves installing drip lines near the pant or  grass roots.  This is frequently done with planting beds.  However, this can  also be down with lawn which frequently
use much more water in typical  suburban homes than all other water use combined.  Click here for one choice on drip  irrigation.

Central Texas  Gardener" is an excellent PBS TV show with gardening information.  Click here for  their web site.

Click here for a good web site "Flowers, Plants, and Gardening: For Kids!".  This has links to other pages which we think that you will find interesting and useful.  This link was sent to us by Bonnie McVey bonnie@mrsmcvey.com and her 5th grade students.

A good magazine is "Texas Gardener" http://www.texasgardener.com/
